Chapter 6

Diana felt the adrenaline rush she longed for. It was a common sensation when she was on the force, but she had missed it these last couple of months. She shut the attic door and hurried to her room. She wanted to take a warm, soothing shower after being in a dust-filled environment.

She removed the necklace from her pocket and took a closer look at the pendant. There was a series of small oddly shaped cubes at the back of the mini shovel.

How fascinating! she thought.

KNOCK! KNOCK! KNOCK!

The sound of three rapid, firm knocks broke her thoughts. She opened the door, and there stood Mrs. Johnson.

“Hi, Dearie. I’m sorry to be a bother,” the elderly lady greeted.

“Mrs. Johnson, hi. It’s no bother at all. Is something wrong?” Diana replied, trying to act natural.

“Well, no, I’ve come to ask a favor…” her words broke as she noticed the gold necklace Diana was holding. “What’s that sparkly jewel you have there?” she asked excitedly.

“Oh, this?” responded Diana. “Just an old heirloom.” She quickly placed it on her dressing table, which was right by the door. “Tell me about this favor.” She smiled, clasping her hands together.

“Well, I’m sure Norman has told you that I wanted to extend our stay to spend our anniversary here.”

“Yes! He mentioned that.”

“Well, it’s our 40th anniversary tomorrow, so I was wondering if you could do something special to celebrate? Decorations, a special menu, things like that?” Mrs. Johnson requested.

The request caught Diana off guard. She’d never hosted an event before. The timing was also a bit challenging, with all the strange happenings. She opened her mouth to respond but closed it again when she saw how hope and excitement glistened in Mrs. Johnson’s eyes.

The retired detective inhaled deeply and smiled.

“Of course! It’s a major occasion!” Diana exclaimed, matching her guest’s excitement. “We’ll decorate and create a spectacular setting.”

“Oh, Diana, thank you!” Mrs. Johnson responded excitedly.

“If you’d like, we can make arrangements for you to invite a few people,” Diana suggested.

“Oh, that would be fantastic. Let’s iron out the details after mealtime. It’s short notice, so I don’t want to put you out of your way.”

Diana smiled. “No worries at all, Mrs. Johnson. You can have the event exactly as you like. By the way, where is Mr. Johnson?”

“He’s out getting a new suit; of course, I told him I wanted our 40th anniversary to be the most incredible one yet, with lots of photographs,” Mrs. Johnson explained. “I got myself a dress, too,” she added. Her eyes glistened with youthful exuberance despite her age.

Diana smiled at the sincerity of the lady’s love for her husband.

“But anyway, let me not keep you up from your duties, Dearie. We’ll talk about this tonight,” Mrs. Johnson ended the conversation and ambled to her room.

Diana closed her door and quickly showered. She used the quiet time to reflect on everything going on.

Hannah Smith. It makes no sense. None at all. Was my grandmother married previously? But that doesn’t correspond with what I know about her life and her age.
